Brookhaven Memorial Federation of Nurses and Healthcare Professionals (BMFNHP) at the Long Island Community Hospital are fighting for a new contract. This is very important, not just for healthcare professionals, but for the hospital, the community it serves and for Brookhaven’s parent organization, NYU.
What We Are Fighting For
Ensuring fair pay and benefits for these workers is crucial for maintaining high standards of patient care, attracting top talent, and fostering community trust. As part of the NYU system, Long Island Community Hospital should reflect the same commitment to excellence as other NYU facilities.
We call on the hospital to:
- Support Quality Patient Care: Properly compensated healthcare professionals are key to achieving the best patient outcomes.
- Maintain NYU's Standards: Long Island Community Hospital should not be the “bargain healthcare” wing of NYU. LICH should reflect NYU's commitment to excellence by ensuring fair pay and benefits, aligning with the standards of other NYU facilities.
- Attract and Retain Talent: Competitive compensation helps attract and retain top healthcare professionals, reducing turnover and improving care consistency.
- Strengthen Community Trust: Fair contracts enhance the reputation of LICH and maintain the community's trust in its healthcare services.
- Long-Term Savings: Investing in fair pay and benefits now can reduce costs over time by minimizing turnover and reliance on temporary staffing.
What We Are Proposing
BMFNHP is advocating for proper staffing levels to ensure that Long Island Community Hospital can continue to deliver high-quality care to the community. This fight is about prioritizing patient needs over corporate profits and building a stable healthcare system that serves everyone.
Our proposals focus on improving wages, benefits, staffing ratios, and overall working conditions to ensure that Brookhaven's healthcare professionals are compensated fairly and can provide the highest quality care to our patients.
- Wages: We are seeking substantial increases for both new and experienced members to match what we deserve and to help recruit and retain top talent. Other NYU workers earn as much as 7%-10% more than us, and we demand parity.
- Staffing Ratios: We have demanded that staffing ratios be added to our contract. This is the best way to protect our patients and provide critical services safely.
- Healthcare and Pension Benefits: BMFNHP is not only looking to preserve our healthcare and pension benefits from cuts but also to enhance our benefits. Slashing employee benefits is not the way to attract talent and provide outstanding patient care. BMFNHP members live and work in the community and deserve access to quality, affordable healthcare and a secure retirement.
- The ability to take time off: BMFNHP is advocating for additional time off and changes in procedures to ensure we can actually use the paid time off we currently have. Our members have families and personal lives that also require attention and time off helps relieve exhaustion and reduce burn out.
