    NYSUT educators are keeping books in schools, celebrating diverse and inclusive stories

    Amid ongoing battles to ban books in schools and libraries nationwide, our members are taking a stand against censorship and for academic and learning freedom. Recently, a report published by the nonprofit free speech organization, PEN America, found that in the first half of the 2022-23 academic year, book bans increased by 28% from the previous semester.

Educators across New York mourn this tragedy and stand with the Nichols family and their community as they endure this unimaginable loss. NYSUT has compiled resources for educators to help students through this trying time.

    NYSUT members give back for MLK Day

    The statewide union teamed up with the Capital District Area Labor Federation for its third annual day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 16. The event took place at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York in Latham, near NYSUT headquarters, where volunteers sorted and packed produce and other items for the area’s needy.

    NYSUT celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a new poster honoring Jorge Ramos, a Mexican-American journalist and author. Known as “The Walter Cronkite of Latin America,” he is the best-known Spanishlanguage news anchor in the United States.

    At Buffalo rally, education unions stand up to hate

    The education community rallied around student Brooklyn Bullock and the people of Buffalo to stand up to hatred and bigotry following the mass killings at a Buffalo Tops supermarket and at a Texas elementary school just more than a week later. Speaker after speaker, from NYSUT President Andy Pallotta and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten to Buffalo Public Schools Interim Superintendent Tonja Williams and Board of Education President Louis Petrucci, called for communities to come together in this moment and fight for change — for each other and for their children, like Bullock.

    ‘We need a voice’: Long Island educators form AAPI advocacy group

    Mary Waring, a building representative for the East Meadow Teachers Association, is one of roughly 30 educators from public and private K-12 schools, colleges and education-related fields who last year formed the Asian Pacific American Council of Educators-Long Island (she is the organization’s secretary). The council took off with encouragement from both the Long Island Latino Teachers Association and Long Island Black Educators Association.
