Recommend a Banned or Challenged Book

Celebrate the freedom to read!

In 2023, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom documented 4,240 unique book titles targeted for censorship, along with 1,247 demands to censor library books, materials and resources. More than 45 percent of those censorship attempts targeted titles representing the "voices and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals."

NYSUT members across the state are seeing challenges to the books they recommend in their classrooms, and the titles that they include in school libraries.

We want to hear from you. Is there a banned or challenged book that you maintain in your class library? This year we will feature banned and challenged books in NYSUT United's "Check it Out" column.
