Many steps are needed to become a Teaching Assistant in New York, including college study, a state certification exam and specialized training in everything from bullying prevention to recognizing signs of child abuse. After three years, TAs can earn tenure, which provides due process rights. Throughout their career, TAs are annually evaluated and must continue professional development. The State Education Department has structured TA certification as a career ladder, with three levels of increasing requirements.
