Bayard Rustin (1912--1987) and Laverne Cox are honored on the first NYSUT posters recognizing LGBTQ History Month in October. Rustin was a leading activist in the American Civil Rights movement. An openly gay man, Rustin began advocating for gay and lesbian causes later in life, working to bring the AIDS crisis to the attention of the NAACP.
Laverne Cox is an American actress and LGBTQ advocate best known for her portrayal of Sophia Burset on the Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black." Cox is the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a primetime Emmy award for acting.
