José Limón (1908-1972) a Mexican-born modern dancer and choreographer hailed by The New York Times as the "finest male dancer of his time," is the 2015 NYSUT Hispanic Heritage Month poster honoree. Limón studied and performed in New York City with modern dance pioneers Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, premiering his first major choreographic work, Danzas Mexicanas, in 1937. He founded the José Limón Dance Company in 1946, choreographing more than 74 works, including his signature piece, The Moor's Pavane, based on Shakespeare's Othello.
