NYSUT Secretary Treasurer J. Philippe Abraham thanked his wife, staff, fellow NYSUT and UUP officers and “his social justice co-conspirators” for their steadfast support and ongoing collaboration as he accepted an award from the New York Branch of the NAACP in late June. Abraham also thanked Patrick Romain, UUP-Albany, for nominating him for the honor.
“In receiving this award, I am reminded of the powerful words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’ — these words resonate with me and serve as a constant reminder of the work that still lies ahead,” said Abraham who encouraged attendees to stand against systemic injustices, advocate for those whose voices are marginalized and work towards an inclusive society where every individual is given dignity and respect.
He was recognized at the NAACP’s June gala, themed “When We Fight … We Win!” reflecting the group’s 113-year history of activism. Under his leadership, NYSUT’s social justice department has launched a series of groundbreaking programs through its Many Threads, One Fabric initiative, which Abraham developed. The program examines racial justice, diversity and equity issues through programs like Sticks and Stones: Understanding Implicit Bias and Stereotypes, the Social Justice Academy and the Pathways to Leadership Program.
With the November election fast approaching, Abraham encouraged attendees to make their voices heard on Election Day. “Remember, when we fight, we win, it’s important that everyone who is voting age and eligible votes in November,” he said. “If nothing else, please remember that.”
Abraham pledged to continue fighting for the values and principles both he and the NAACP stand for and to “serve our community, fight for equality and work towards a future where justice prevails.”
