It is National Tax Security Awareness Week! The NYSUT Accounting Department would like to remind all affiliates to be cautious and conscious of protecting the sensitive financial information of your local and your members. Some tips to consider:
- Keep sensitive data in a locked filing cabinet or protected electronic file, including payroll deduction reports, membership enrollment forms, copies of 1099s and cancelled checks.
- Check with the recipients of 1099’s to make sure your local has the correct name, social security number and mailing address before issuing and sending 1099’s.
- Use IRS authorized e-file providers for all IRS electronic filings.
- Two officers should review bank statements monthly for irregular or unauthorized activity.
- Never write a check with a blank payee or payable to cash.
- If making a donation to a charitable organization, verify their legitimacy by requesting their Employer Identification Number and checking it here.
- Never pay a bill to the IRS without making sure it’s legitimate (please reach out to your accountant or Amy.Ethier@nysut.org if your organization receives a notice and bill from the IRS).
- Recognize tax scams and fraud.
