NYSUT Long Island Health Care Professionals Conference: Emotional and Mental Health Care in our Schools

This conference is a joint effort between NYSUT, the Stony Brook Trauma Center and the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association It is intended for the titles of School Nurses, Nurses’ Aides, Guidance Counselors, School Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and Speech Therapists.

Special Guest Speakers will be:

  • Dr. Stephen Dewey, Ph.D.- Speaking on the effects of addiction on the adolescent brain.
  • Deb Salamone, MS Ed.- Presenting on the “trauma sensitive schools” model and how to build a system of support around the whole child.

In addition, participants will be invited to choose from one of the following workshops:

  • “Stop The Bleed”: Presenter will be a Health Care Professional from the Stony Brook Trauma Center
  • Active Shooter Training: Presenter will be an Officer from the Suffolk County Police Department
  • Narcan Training: Presenter will be an Officer from the Suffolk County Police Department
  • Managing the Cost of Caring/Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma: Ani Shahinian, L.C.S.W., NYSUT
  • Protecting Your Nurse’s License: Elizabeth Shuster, Esq. NYSUT Legal Department
  • Poverty- A Crisis In Education: Carolyn Williams, Assistant Education Services and Project Coordinator, NYSUT

There will also be representatives from: NYSUT’s Education and Learning Trust, NYSUT’s Member Benefits, The New York State Association of School Nurses (NYSASN), the New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA), and GE Pickering – a vendor for “Stop The Bleed” training supplies.
