That's right: #ItsJustNotEnough!
Although the Executive Budget does include a $956 million proposed increase in school aid for the next year, it is not enough to maintain current student academic programs and services...and the education experts know it. In December, the Regents and the Education Conference Board all recommended a state aid increase of at least $2.1 billion for schools.
Take action now at the NYSUT Member Action Center to ask lawmakers to support a total increase of $2.2 billion in general purpose school aid in the new state budget!
We know that public schools remain the best investment our state can make, and the increased funding would help to provide continuing support for struggling schools; make our schools safer for all students; improve school climate; offer additional mental health services; meet the needs of English language learner (ELL) students; provide high-quality professional development; and expand access for college and career pathways; among many other things.
With the tax cap set at two percent for the year, state support for schools will be critical! The tax cap will continue to impede local school districts' ability to raise revenue, while school districts grapple with greater, more intense student needs and increased mandatory costs.
Take action now at the NYSUT Member Action Center to ask lawmakers to support a total increase of $2.2 billion in general purpose school aid in the new state budget!
Please help educate lawmakers on the critical need for increased school aid.
In solidarity,
Andrew Pallotta
NYSUT President
