BUFFALO, April 2, 2009 - More than 2,500 delegates to New York State United Teachers annual convention will honor one of their own this week as New York State Teacher of the Year.
Vickie Mike, a Spanish teacher at Horseheads High School, was named teacher of the year by the New York State Education Department following a rigorous round of interviews and reviews.
"Vickie Mike is a proud example of the creative and committed educators in our schools today, shaping futures and inspiring students," said NYSUT President Richard C. Iannuzzi.
Union Vice President Maria Neira agreed: "Vickie is an outstanding representative of the teaching profession. She thinks and teaches 'outside the box,' incorporating new technologies as well as life experiences into her teaching methods."
Mike is an alumna of Horseheads High School and a product of the State University of New York system, with degrees from Corning Community College and the SUNY colleges at Brockport, Buffalo and Binghamton.
The RA - NYSUT's policy-making convention – begins Thursday, April 2, at the Buffalo-Niagara Convention Center and continues through Saturday, April 4.
