State Education Dept. needs your input on new Algebra exams

Posted: Nov. 4, 2005

ON THE WEB: Survey: Implementation of the New Regents Mathematics Examinations

The State Education Department has posted a 7-12 math survey online to gauge how prepared teachers and schools are for the new Algebra Regents exam. The deadline to respond has been extended to Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Two questions at the heart of the survey are:

  1. What year should the Integrated Algebra exam be implemented?
  2. Should SED buy questions from a vendor and have New York state teachers review and revise them?

While much of the feedback NYSUT has received from math teachers favors replacing the Math A exam with the Integrated Algebra under the June 2008 implementation deadline, NYSUT is encouraging math teachers to take the survey so they can accurately reflect the readiness of their schools and students.

In December, the Board of Regents will be making a decision on when to first administer the Integrated Algebra exam as part of their deliberations. They want information on the readiness of schools, teachers, and students regarding curriculum alignment and professional development.

Please go to the SED Web site at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/sar/nrmeintro.shtml to take the survey. Again, the survey will be available until Nov. 23.
