The State Education Department has posted the English Language Arts Core Curriculum on its Web site for grades 3 - 8.

You may access the core at www.emsc.nysed.gov/3-8/e-home.htm .

While the four English language arts standards have not changed, the revised core provides grade-by-grade delineation of the performance indicators: what students should know, and be able to do, in pre-kindergarten through grade 12, as a result of skilled instruction.

An addition to this new core curriculum is a literacy strand, pre-kindergarten through grade 8.

The grade 9 to 12 component of the literacy strand will be posted when it becomes available.

New York State United Teachers had several representatives from the NYSUT Elementary Education Committee and the NYSUT English Language Arts Committee on the development team.
