UPDATE: JUNE 14, 2005: State Education Dept. updates Mathematics Toolkit

UPDATE: JUNE 7, 2005: English Language Arts Core Curriculum now available

New grade-by-grade core curricula covering pre-K though grade 12 take effect in September for math and English Language Arts. The State Education Department has begun to distribute some support materials online and has promised more in coming weeks.

Included in SED's online "math toolkit" are the new core curricula and alignment modifications and a template to determine if textbooks are aligned to the new standards. SED has also released a student list of math terms by grade level, and a glossary for teachers. Math and ELA test samplers, including full text with administrative guide and scoring rubrics with anchor papers, are scheduled to be online in September.

SED released a similar online "toolkit" for English Language Arts (ELA), including the revised grade-by-grade pre-K-12 core curriculum with literacy bands for pre-K-8. Literacy bands for grades 9-12 should be available this summer.

Throughout the summer, you can access any new materials as they are released by going to NYSUT's Web site at www.nysut.org/standards, where we will link you to materials and provide news updates. Or log on to the State Education Department Web site at www.emsc.nysed.gov/3-8.

In addition, your district's Professional Development Plan should have been revised to spell out the professional development that will be available to handle the changes this fall. For details on the status and content of the PDP, contact your building rep or local president.
