New York State United Teachers is your professional partner in helping students meet higher academic standards.
Advocacy
The statewide union is the chief advocate of funding for schools, public higher education and teacher centers.
NYSUT officials speak out on your behalf, maintaining regular contact with members of the state Legislature and education policy-makers at the state Board of Regents and the State Education Department.
Leaders and staff are in regular contact with the decision-makers, sharing member points of view on everything from curriculum and certification to test issues.
Communication
A key source of information on changing standards, the New York Teacher, is circulated bi-weekly during the school year to more than 525,000 active and retired NYSUT members.
NYSUT's award-winning Web site (www.nysut.org) carries articles from New York Teacher and other resources including Information Bulletins and Briefing Bulletins from the union's Division of Research and Educational Services and special reports on standards-related issues.
National issues
NYSUT's national affiliate, the 1.3-million-member American Federation of Teachers, provides a vehicle through which NYSUT can advocate at the federal level.
The AFT offers a variety of informational services for teachers, including staff development activities.
Check out the national affiliate's Web site at www.aft.org.
Education and Learning Trust
NYSUT's Education and Learning Trust offers a variety of professional development courses geared to the standards through its Effective Teaching Program. ETP also provides master's degree programs, graduate-level education courses, seminars, workshops and in-service programs. Other programs are designed specifically for School-Related Profesionals. For details and a catalog, call (800) 528-6208.
Teacher centers
Teacher centers provide professional development programs teachers need to help students meet the standards.
NYSUT, a long supporter of teacher centers, continues to lobby for continued state funding of teacher centers and supports an active NYSUT Task Force on Teacher Centers.
NYSUT committees
In 1997, NYSUT created nine subject area committees to help the union's Board of Directors formulate policy regarding state learning standards and assessments.
With their members all experts in their subject area, many of the subject area committees have developed popular workshops to provide content-specific professional development to teachers and support staff.
Other NYSUT standing committees and task forces meet regularly to stay on top of developments and voice concerns in specific areas.
