About the Literacy Institute

Early literacy is critical to closing the achievement gap in New York State and in reaching the intent of No Child Left Behind for all children. Given the national focus on early literacy with significant funding supporting Reading First and with the addition of annual English Language Arts (ELA) assessments beginning in grade 3, the NYSUT Literacy Institute will focus on best practices in Reading First and offer practical presentations for teachers who teach students from grades Pre-K to 5. The sessions will present proven instructional practices that are based on scientific research including Reading First and provide strategies that work with early literacy learners.

Session topics include:

  • Infusion of literacy across all content areas grades 3-5
  • Use of technology in early literacy grades K-5
  • The basics of Reading First and how they apply to every classroom
  • Wilson Reading Program/Balanced Literacy
  • NYS Reading Academy - Professional Development in Reading First
  • Models for successful partnerships between early literacy teachers, school and public librarians

Who should attend?

  • Teachers grades Pre-K - 5, in both Reading First schools and non Reading First schools
  • Early childhood teachers - UPK, Head Start, Even Start
  • Elementary AIS, Title I and remedial reading teachers
  • Elementary librarians, social workers, administrators
  • Elementary special education and English language learners (ELL) teachers
