| State Education Department Hosts Regional Forums on Grades 3-8 Testing Program and the ELA and Math Grade-by-Grade Curricula January 14, 2005 NYSUT is informing K-12 local presidents by mail that the State Education Department (SED) is holding regional one-day forums on the Grades 3-8 Testing program and the English Language Arts and Mathematics Grade-by-Grade Curricula. The goal of the forums is to help all educators and parents better understand the impact of this testing program and the changes that will occur as a result of its implementation. The State Education Department recommends that each district send a team, including teacher leaders, to the forum. Participants will have an opportunity to share their concerns, suggestions, and comments about the new testing system. Each forum will have two sessions. Session 1, from 1:00-4:00 p.m., is designed for educators (administrators and instructional staff) to cover testing, curriculum, and their impact on special populations, with small and large group discussions. Session II, covering the same topics from 5:00-7:30 p.m., is for the Boards of Education, parents, and community members. NYSUT includes talking points in the mailings to local presidents. Copies are also available from Research and Educational Services at 1-800-342-9810 x6649. A list of dates and locations is available at. the State Education Department Web site for Grades 3-8 at emsc32.nysed.gov/3-8/home.html. Since SED is still identifying forum sites you are encouraged to check regularly for updates. |
