Conference Theme

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Brown vs. Board of Education decision, this year's conference focuses on ways to use our knowledge and strengths to educate all of New York's students, including those who have traditionally lagged behind. In accordance with the Supreme Court's decision that “we must provide every child with an education that will prepare them for full participation in our society,” the conference will explore strategies for school improvement in areas that will lead to more explosions of excellence.

Conference Strands

The 23rd Annual Statewide Conference Strengthening Learning and Teaching concentrates on five critical program areas: Professional Development — identifying best practices professional development models and research–based mentoring; Middle-Level Education — making modifications required for more students to achieve success in the middle grades; Special Education providing more opportunities for students with special learning needs to participate in the general education curriculum; Literacy — demonstrating the best methods of teaching reading; No Child Left Behind (NCLB) — The UFT Teacher Center will conduct a series of workshops to support school-based leadership, especially in Title I school-wide program schools. Schools that have been identified as a School In Need of Improvement (SINI) are encouraged to send teams to participate in this four part professional development program for school/district teams engaged in the school improvement effort. Also, since data is an essential building block for school improvement, we will continue the dialogue begun at last year's conference on how data and information are translated and used for school-wide improvement.
