Call for Proposals

New York State United Teacher’s BOCES Statewide Planning Committee and the Career and Technical Education Subject Area Committee will host a professional learning day for career and technical education teachers. The professional learning day will be held on Friday, October 22, 2004 at NYSUT Headquarters in Latham, New York. Proposal submission date is June 4, 2004.

We invite CTE educators, core academic subject area teachers, school administrators, staff devel-opers and higher education faculty to submit proposals for workshops that highlight the importance of three different skill sets: academic, technical, and employability in order to meet New York State’s higher learning standards. The professional learning day seeks to showcase some of the best instructional practices for strengthening teaching and learning in career and technical educa-tion. The day is organized around four strands: instructional integration and delivery systems; in-structional practices and innovative trends; uses of data, research and performance trends; and professional development models for career and technical educators. Our higher education part-ners are encouraged to submit workshop proposals that highlight instructional strategies for inte-grating academics into career and technical education for all students, but particularly for those who require additional support for learning. Finally, we are seeking workshops that are based on research, will stimulate thinking, encourage reflection, provide teaching models that can be repli-cated, and most importantly, will allow CTE students to achieve their academic and career goals.

Proposal submissions should relate to the overall conference theme and address the topics listed on the following page. Workshop sessions should be approximately one and one-half (1_) hours in length. Prior to submission of the proposal, please obtain the signature of your NYSUT local un-ion president.

The deadline for submitting proposals is June 4, 2004.
Successful applicants will be notified by June 25, 2004.

Presenters will receive one free conference registration and a stipend of $100 each for a maxi-mum of two presenters per workshop session.

TOPIC AREAS

Instructional integration and delivery systems — In order for CTE students to achieve NYS’s higher learning standards, there must be a seamless integration of academics into the career and technical education curriculum. We are seeking workshops that will showcase effective delivery systems for:

  • Integration of academics into career and technical education
  • Academic Intervention Services (AIS) models
  • Integration of Health and Safety studies into the CTE curriculum
  • Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) delivery models
  • How the teaching of writing and critical thinking skills can be integrated across the curriculum?
  • Models that support students who are struggling to meet higher learning standards
  • Collaborative and team teaching models for the integration of academics into CTE

Innovation, initiatives and trends — What innovations, initiatives and trends will allow career and techni-cal education to respond to rapidly changing student and workforce needs? Several interesting models of and methods for providing career-related education are emerging; therefore we are seeking workshops that:

  • Provide an understanding of what these innovations and initiatives are and their usefulness to career and technical education
  • Models that include secondary and post-secondary partnerships and collaborations
  • Describe how aspects of High Schools That Work (HSTW) and New Visions programs can be replicated or are applicable to regular CTE programs
  • School and industry partnerships that strengthen that strengthen teaching and learning
  • Comprehensive guidance programs that engage students and parents and focus on student planning, career intervention and career development

Data, research and performance trends — Data can be used to answer a variety of questions related to teaching and learning. How well students have mastered the material? What program improvements are needed? What professional development is needed to help the CTE teacher change their instructional ap-proach? Regardless of the question, the decisions educators make should involve analysis of assessment data. We are seeking workshops that will provide participants with an understanding of:

  • Uses of data to determine performance trends
  • Assessments to determine mastery of academics in CTE
  • How to use data for program improvements
  • Uses of NYS assessment data to identify strengths and/or weaknesses in the curriculum and to inform in-struction decisions
  • Uses of industry assessments (NOCTI, CISCO, AYES, ASCE)
  • Applications for using research and scientifically-based evidence to inform instructional decision-making

Professional Development — Professional development is critical to improve the CTE educator’s knowledge base and qualifications to teach both academic and technical subjects throughout their careers. We are seeking workshops that showcase professional development models that can be replicated including:

  • Mentoring and induction models that support CTE teachers’ retention into teaching
  • Orientation programs that meet the needs of new or experienced teachers or experienced entrants into CTE
  • Professional development focused on helping CTE teachers maintain currency in their industry field
  • Professional development models that involve higher education institutions, industry or partnerships with both
