84.9% of School Budgets Passed

May 21, 2004

On May 18th, school districts across the state submitted their budgets for a public vote. Overall, the vast majority of those budgets were approved - 574 of the 676 districts that reported to the State Education Department had their budgets approved and 102 districts reported their budgets were defeated - an 84.9 percent approval rate. Although this 84.9 percent passage rate is the lowest passage rate since 1996, it is consistent with the 36-year average passage rate of 82.4 percent.

School districts on Long Island had a particularly difficult time winning voter approval of their budget proposals - only 79 of the 125 districts on Long Island had their budget approved - a passage rate of 63.2 percent.

Districts with a defeated budget may resubmit the same budget to the voters, resubmit a revised budget to the voters, or adopt a contingency budget. If a second budget proposal is defeated, the district must adopt a contingency budget. Spending increases under a contingency budget are capped at 2.76 percent over last year's level.
