NYS okays theater as a certificate title

April 2004

There is good news for teachers of Theater in New York State. New Regulations effective February 2, 2004 created Theater as a certificate title. Those teaching Theater as of September 1, 2004 will need to hold a valid certificate or a Statement of Continued Eligibility (SOCE) to continue to teach legally.

Individuals currently teaching Theater may apply for a SOCE to continue teaching; the SOCE will be the equivalent of a Permanent certificate. Eligibility for the SOCE is limited to those teaching Theater in a public school in New York State for three (3) of the last five (5) years immediately preceding February 2, 2004 who also possess a Permanent certificate in any title. (This teaching need not have been full-time; more than five (5) classes per week will suffice.)

To apply:

  1. obtain an application (OTAPP-1) by going to www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert, click on "Obtaining Your Certificate" to obtain this application;
  2. complete the application in full; (the Code has not yet been determined; the Title "Theater" will suffice);
  3. enclose a copy of a letter on school district letterhead from the Superintendent stating that the applicant has taught in the title "Theater" for the specified amount of time, including dates;
  4. mail these documents with a Postal Money order for one hundred dollars ($100.00) payable to the New York State Education Department (registered or certified mail, return receipt requested) to:

The New York State Education Department
Office of Teaching Initiatives
P.O. Box 22064
Albany, NY 12201

Commissioner's Regulations require such applications be filed on or before June 30, 2004. SOCE's will be effective September 1, 2004.
