RA bolsters beleaguered local

Saturday, May 6, 2006

Tony McCann, former president of the Shenendehowa TA, brought a special order of business before the convention to support the Hoosick Falls TA.

The 110-member local on the Vermont border has been without a contract for three years. The school board recently gave administrators 6 percent raises while claiming the district doesn't have enough funds to increase teacher wages. "Teacher salaries in Hoosick are $10,000 below neighboring districts," said McCann, a member of the NYSUT Board of Directors.

"I want our brothers and sisters to know, whether they are members of the largest or smallest local union, they are also members of a union that will never turns its back on a single union," said Bill Ritchie, president of the Albany Public School TA. The special order passed overwhelmingly.
