Need an example of a member walking the walk? Look no further than Greece Athena varsity boys basketball coach Jim Johnson, whose visit with his team was an RA high point.
As an early graduation gift to Jason McElwain, an autistic student who had worked with dedication as the team manager, Johnson put him in the last game of the season with about four minutes left and the team securely ahead.
"He was so loyal to our program and had contributed so much that I wanted to give him the gift of suiting up for the last game of senior year," said Johnson. The rest is history. "J-Mac" hit an astonishing six three-point shots (20 points total). Video caught it all as students charged the floor and lifted him to their shoulders.
Following a showing of the now legendary film clip, NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira introduced Jason; his teammates; and Coach Johnson and his wife, Pat, who is also a NYSUT member. The crowd, many wiping away tears, greeted the group with a standing ovation.
"I've been very blessed to coach, and to teach - the greatest profession," said Johnson. Added Jason: "I want to say thanks to the team, my parents, Coach Johnson, coach's wife and my fellow seniors."
