Pre-RA confab highlights local issues

Local and retiree council presidents will be the first to get details of a planned speakers program to defend against the privatization of Social Security.

Those details, and a number of workshops, will be provided during the Pre-RA Local & Retiree Council Presidents Conference, which starts Wednesday, April 6 and concludes at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7.

State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes will provide a national labor update. Local presidents who represent School-Related Professionals will get a 90-minute legal update that will provide a primer on civil service employee discipline and discharge under Civil Service Law section 75 and employer disciplinary actions reviewable under contractual just cause arbitration provisions. Also, what happens when public employees are named in civil actions will be discussed.

Locals that donated $1,000 or more to NYSUT's tsunami relief effort and a delegation of teacher union leaders from Mexico will be recognized.
