Rooted in Solidarity

33 years of services on display at convention

March 28, 2005

rooted in solidarityWhile there have been many memorable union conventions, the 33rd annual Representative Assembly is clearly one for the record books.

Tom Hobart, NYSUT's first and only elected president, retires at the end of this convention. (See related story for details on a tribute.) Historians will note that Hobart shared presidential duties with the legendary Al Shanker for one year, but both were appointed, not elected, for that year.

"We've been planning a once-in-a-lifetime three days that will honor Tom's longevity and legacy as well as highlight all aspects of the union, our solidarity, political action, social justice and our traditions," said Tony Bifaro, who oversees the union's annual convention.

Delegates will hear from an impressive assortment of speakers. (See the roster.)

The main business is 145 new resolutions for delegates to deliberate, and five resolutions have been received for reaffirmation. Topics range from academic freedom to opposition to Wal-Mart's anti-labor and discriminatory practices. Taking note of the difficult fiscal climate, a number of resolutions call for increased state support of schools, hospitals, higher ed facilities, BOCES, teacher centers and safety and health training programs.

Delegates, who are elected by each local union, will also consider one constitutional amendment, which calls for a state dues increase.

Included among the new resolutions are a number of resolutions due to expire at the end of the 2005 RA that have been resubmitted to ensure they remain high on the union's agenda.

Election of NYSUT officers and members of the Board of Directors as well as delegates and alternates to the AFT Convention will take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9.

Pre-register visitors!

Great news is that the union keeps growing. That also means an increase in the number of new delegates - and we're expected to break attendance records, so all delegates must pre-register guests. All visitors need a delegate sponsor.
