Unions fight for worker safety and health
June 8, 2006 NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi holds the NYCOSH award. Picking fights about important health and safety concerns is just one reason NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi was honored by the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health at its annual awards celebration earlier this month. When he was on the executive board of the Central Islip Teachers Association, Iannuzzi was part of a group that took on the administration over the issue of The Right to Know and the application of pesticides to school grounds — and won, said Joel Shufro, NYCOSH executive director. Iannuzzi later became president of the Central Islip TA. Shortly after becoming NYSUT president last year, Iannuzzi continued the statewide union’s role in supporting NYCOSH by offering the organization space in its Suffolk County Regional Office so that NYCOSH could have a Long Island location. Iannuzzi also backs the annual NYSUT-NYCOSH worker safety poster contest. The organization presents annual awards to individuals who make a difference in the fight to make workplaces safer and more healthful. |
