Adjunct professors vote to affiliate with NYSUT Marymount Manhattan faculty seek recognition and respect June 8, 2006
New York State United Teachers' ongoing effort to organize adjunct professors at colleges and universities statewide received its latest boost when adjuncts at Marymount Manhattan College voted last month to affiliate with NYSUT. In a representation election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board, Marymount Manhattan College adjuncts voted 95-23 to unionize and have NYSUT and its national affiliate, the American Federation of Teachers, represent them in negotiations for a contract with the college on East 71st Street in Manhattan. "This is a win, win, win situation for Marymount, for the adjunct professors and for the students," said Daniel Meltzer, an adjunct professor of critical thinking. "The recognition, respect and acknowledgement of the true value of those who teach at an institution of higher learning can only benefit all concerned." NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi, who praised Marymount Manhattan administrators for maintaining neutrality throughout the union campaign, said the college's 261 adjuncts had taken an important step toward winning better working conditions. "Adjuncts at Marymount Manhattan now have a seat at the table and — through their new union — a voice in the decisions that impact them," Iannuzzi said. "Like a growing number of adjuncts on campuses across the state, Marymount Manhattan adjuncts understand that union representation means they'll get the respect they deserve, along with higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions." At press time, NYSUT was still waiting for the NLRB to certify election results. |
