Union action: Buzzing about the budget
May 11, 2006 Jefferson-Lewis Teacher Center's Sheila Owens is urging Assemblyman Darrell Aubertine, D- Watertown, to support restorations for teacher center funding. Communicating with elected representatives is a year-round activity for New York State United Teachers political activists, but the weeks leading up to the state budget are especially busy. Aside from district office visits and NYSUT's giant Committee of 100 lobby day in Albany , several political action coordinators held mid-March regional legislative receptions to bring the union's message home for local lawmakers. In photo, Jefferson-Lewis Teacher Center's Sheila Owens is urging Assemblyman Darrell Aubertine, D- Watertown, to support restorations for teacher center funding. He was one of many lawmakers who attended the North Country Legislative Reception. More than 150 attended the Erie County Legislative reception, including legislators from both sides of the aisle and one lawmaker who was elected just a few weeks before, Sen. Marc A. Coppola, D-Buffalo. In the photo at right, Kenmore TA's Keith Augustine, Regional VOTE-COPE coordinators Ron Bongi and Don Benker, NYSUT President Emeritus Tom Hobart and Williamsville TA's Michelle Pancoe share a light moment. |
