In a natural alliance, parents and the Alliance for Quality Education joined the United Federation of Teachers recently for UFT's annual lobbying trip to Albany.

Carrying signs and chanting that New York City needs more schools, smaller classes and the billions of dollars in additional state aid that the judge in the Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit ruled that city schools deserve, nearly 2,500 activists streamed from a basketball arena to the steps of the state Capitol.

There, their numbers swelled as upstate educators joined the rally. Jerry Lotierzo and Bill Spreter drove in from central New York to lend support. "We're all in this together," said Lotierzo, a United Liverpool Faculty Association retiree.

Spreter, a Hannibal FA retiree, agreed. "We're all against these tuition tax credits," which would help only parents who send their children to private or parochial schools.

UFT is New York State United Teachers' affiliate in New York City schools.
