Fostering unity in higher education
March 2, 2006 Peter Pasqualino of the NEA/NY is briefed by NYSUT's Ellis Gage Searles, left, of Mohawk Valley Community College and Shane Burd of Rockland Community College. Forging bonds between the higher education members of New York State United Teachers and the National Education Association of New York continues, as the two unions move toward unification on Sept. 1. At their winter meeting in New York City, members of NYSUT's Higher Education Council welcomed Peter Pasqualino of Fulmont CC Association of College Educators, an NEA affiliate. Pasqualino is co-chairman of NEA/NY's Community College Council. Among the concerns shared by the higher education activists is the controversial Academic Bill of Rights, which is being promoted with new legislation. It was dubbed a "subversion of academic freedom" in a resolution approved at NYSUT's Representative Assembly last year. If the proposed unification of NYSUT and NEA/NY takes place, it would add about 2,200 members from NEA/NY to NYSUT's community college membership rolls, bringing the total to 8,300. |
