New York Teacher launches ERS column

Jan. 19, 2006

Starting this issue, New York Teacher is reviving a column that will give School-Related Professionals the opportunity to ask questions about the New York State and Local Employees' Retirement System. The informational column will be written by state Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi, who is sole administrator of the ERS pension system.

The ERS pension system has nearly 1 million members statewide, many of them non-instructional school district employees who depend on ERS for financial security in their retirement years.

The column is designed to provoke members of New York State United Teachers who are in the system to start thinking about — and planning for — their ultimate retirement. "This type of information makes members feel more comfortable going into retirement planning," said Glenn Lucas, a retired SRP leader from New Rochelle , Westchester County .
