Grad students walk the line
Dec. 8, 2005 Members of New York University's graduate assistant union picket before a campus building last month. The union, United Auto Workers Local 2110, initiated the strike Nov. 9 to pressure the university to reopen contract negotiations. Several Professional Staff Congress members have joined the graduate workers on the picket line. PSC represents New York State United Teachers members at the City University of New York. "On the first day of the strike the picket line was huge, spirited and the PSC had a significant presence," said Jim Perlstein, co-chair of the PSC Solidarity Committee. "The union at NYU is carrying the ball for grad student collective bargaining nationwide, and we want to be there on the line every day."
