In recognition of 25 years of service, the NYS Labor-Religion Coalition established a Coalition-Builder Award in the name of Jim Wood, former executive director of NYSUT, with NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi, at right.

Twenty-five years of striving for social and economic justice were marked last month at the silver anniversary celebration of the New York State Labor-Religion Coalition in Albany.

Highlights included the official installation of New York State United Teachers President Dick Iannuzzi as the group's official co-chairman, a position he assumed from Tom Hobart, the union's founding president, now retired.

jennifer cunningham of 1199 seiu, csea president danny donahue and nysut executive vice president alan lubin celebrate the coalition's 25th anniversary.

Iannuzzi reaffirmed NYSUT's committment to the coalition and emphasized the social justice mission of unionism.

"The New York State Labor-Religion Coalition has a 25-year record of championing the causes of those too burdened to go it alone," said Iannuzzi. "NYSUT and I will continue to work with Bishop Hubbard, as well as the coalition's board and staff, in staying the course."

Iannuzzi shares the chairmanship with Bishop Howard Hubbard of the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese.

The group also presented Jim Wood, the coalition's board president and former NYSUT executive director, with the inaugural Jim Wood Coalition-Builder Award.

"I don't know of anyone who has been as helpful or dedicated to building coalitions, locally and statewide, as Jim Wood," said Brian O'Shaughnessy, the coalition's executive director.
