NYSUT, SUNY team up on college ed programs
Sept. 8, 2005 Kevin McIntyre teaches critical thinking at a new- member program at Suffolk CC. If you're looking to take world-class undergraduate or grad courses that are affordable and convenient, NYSUT's Education and Learning Trust has the answer. ELT has signed new partnerships with two State University of New York schools to begin offering NYSUT members the opportunity to save money when taking certain courses that can be applied toward SUNY degrees. ELT has teamed with SUNY Stony Brook to offer the university's Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program, which fulfills the degree requirement for permanent or professional certification. New York State United Teachers members complete six of the required 33 program credits through ELT at ELT's tuition rates. The remaining credits are completed online at the SUNY tuition rate, and the matriculation fee will be waived for qualifying NYSUT members. ELT also has formed a partnership with Empire State College to offer an 18-credit program designed for teaching assistants who need 18 undergrad-level credits as a term of employment. The program will be taught by ELT, but can be applied toward an undergraduate degree at Empire State College, a SUNY institution that arranges independent study and distance-learning courses and degrees. The first courses for the new partnership will begin in spring 2006, with registration beginning this fall. William Scheuerman, president of United University Professions, representing SUNY academic and professional faculty (including Empire State College), said UUP is excited by the partnership. "NYSUT and UUP are big believers in the value of public education, so it is particularly gratifying to see how involved New York 's public universities are becoming in helping NYSUT grow its continuing-education offerings," he said. Condensed course In August, members of the Faculty Association of Suffolk Community College received a condensed version of a course offered through the ELT-Stony Brook partnership. It was part of the Suffolk CC local's new-member program. The Critical Thinking course was taught by Kevin McIntyre, an ELT instructor for 20-plus years. "The evaluations were very enthusiastic," said local President Ellen Schuler Mauk. "I definitely would recommend it to other community colleges bringing in new members." A history of partnerships ELT also has partnerships with SUNY's Ulster Community College and Genesee Community College to offer several three-credit online courses. Courses such as Introduction to Education for Paraeducators and Supporting Students in Reading and Writing can be taken online for less than $400 per course. In a partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College , ELT offers some MVCC courses at various locations around the state, typically on weekends and at times convenient for professionals. ELT Manager Rosemarie Rosen said discussions continue with SUNY on ways to further the partnership. "New York state's public college system provides an outstanding education at a tremendous value," said Rosen. "ELT and SUNY are excited to work together to make education for NYSUT members even more affordable and accessible." For details, visit www.nysut.org/etp or call ELT at (800) 528-6208. — Kevin Hart |
