Kudos for welfare-to-work effort June 9, 2005 This year, the spotlight found Lori Fabritius on the Bridge. Recognition came in for Fabritius' Bridge program at Jamestown Community College, connecting welfare recipients with jobs: the 2005 President's Award for Excellence in Professional Service from Jamestown CC; the 2005 Chancellor's Award from the State University of New York; and the Superior Outcome Achievement Award by the University Center for Academic and Workforce Development. The program's success is measured in another way, too. This year, the target was to enroll 138 students; Fabritius' office ended up with 267. "We get referrals from the Department of Social Services about people on public assistance who are ready to come to college," Fabritius said. Bridge staff help them find part-time jobs while in school and eventually full-time jobs. This year, seven students gained degrees and moved into the field of nursing, which has a shortage. "Lori is helping to pave the way for new and innovative educational opportunities for our community," said Peg Cornell, president of the Jamestown CC Professional and Supervisory Alliance. For the 41-member local union, Fabritius has helped with negotiations and preparation of grievances. |
