Smart about health

Elementary teachers Rich Reilly and Tricia Livingston of Bayport-Bluepoint TA

March 3, 2005

Elementary teachers Rich Reilly and Tricia Livingston of Bayport-Bluepoint TA check materials they will be working with as they train in the comprehensive HealthSmart curriculum for K-12 students. Part of a larger tobacco-control program in Suffolk County, the day-long curriculum training is provided free to K-12 teachers in the Long Island county by Eastern Suffolk BOCES. The program is funded through the 1998 national settlement that called for tobacco companies to finance antismoking programs and accept curbs on marketing practices that critics say appeal to children. Rather than focusing exclusively on tobacco, HealthSmart deals with all risky adolescent behaviors recognized by the Centers for Disease Control, explained school liaison Martha Kahan, a member of BOCES Educators of Eastern Suffolk.
