Students learn by designing robots

Feburary 17, 2005

R2D2, move over. If you want to check out the latest in scholastic robots, mark your calendar for

March 3-5 at the Rochester Institute of Technology, March 17-19 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, or March 24-26 at Riverbank State Park in New York City. (Admission is free for spectators.)

That's where the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competitions will be held. Students from Rochester to West Islip will participate. Teams of students get a standard "kit of parts" and are challenged to solve a common set of problems in six weeks. Last year, more than 20,000 students pitched in and more than $4.9 million in scholarships were awarded to the top achievers, helping them pursue education in science, engineering and math.
