Union offers courses

Feburary 3, 2005

The NYSUT Education and Learning Trust is collaborating with colleges across the state to offer undergraduate courses specifically designed for anyone seeking state certification as a teaching assistant and those with instructional duties in Title I programs.

A variety of teaching strategies are used, including discussion and group-structured learning activities. Participants will demonstrate application of course content to their own classroom situations. For information on offerings in your area, go to www.nysut.org/etp/paraprofessionals.html on the NYSUT Web site.

The Education and Learning Trust also offers test-prep programs and materials for candidates taking the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills.

Developed by the National Evaluation Service, the ATAS has been required since Feb. 1, 2004, for candidates for a state teaching assistant certificate. In addition, if the school district approves the ATAS as its local assessment, the test may be used to meet No Child Left Behind Act requirements for paraprofessionals in Title I schools.

Participants receive instruction in topics to be tested and test-taking skills. A compact disc will include the instruction from the workshop, with practice questions.

To schedule the five- to six-hour test-prep workshop, contact ELT at (800) 528-6208.
