Charter school petitions
January 20, 2005 Outside the State Education Department building, officials from the Niagara Falls Teachers union and New York State United Teachers unload more than 15,000 letters from opponents to a proposed charter school in Niagara Falls. From left are NYSUT's Chuck Santelli and Maria Neira, and NFT President Joseph Catalano. Working with their statewide union, NFT members collected the letters and delivered them to Albany during the Regents December meeting. Niagara-Wheatfield Teachers Association, headed by Darlene Fegatilli, also spearheaded a letter-writing campaign of its own. The union effort helped convince the Board of Regents to postpone approval and give the Niagara Falls district time to negotiate a better outcome. In January, the Niagara Falls city district announced it would be the chartering agency and the charter school will be located in a former city school. |
