Getting the word out about VOTE-COPE

December 9, 2004

NYSUT Executive Vice President Alan Lubin, VOTE-COPE coordinator Carol Frost and John Harvey, director of NYSUT's North Country regional offices, stand in front of the VOTE-COPE booth at the regional fall leadership conference.

Using her education skills, Carol Frost knows it takes a good presentation to raise awareness for the union's voluntary political action fund. In her third year at a VOTE-COPE booth at the regional leadership conference, the North Country VOTE-COPE coordinator has featured colorful displays showing where the money comes from (with pie charts showing which locals contribute the most) to where VOTE-COPE money goes, such as last year's successful May 3 March for Public Education.

This year, VOTE-COPE paid for the installation of computerized phone systems at NYSUT's regional offices in Plattsburgh and Potsdam . All three North Country regional offices made more than 10,000 calls to members for the Nov. 2 election. Many calls were made on behalf of Assemblyman Darrel Aubertine, D-Watertown, who faced a tough challenge.

"People need to be reminded where the VOTE-COPE money goes," said Frost, who oversees the campaign in the Watertown area. Other North Country coordinators are Greg Littell in Potsdam and Susan Peryea in Plattsburgh.
