Sometimes, the most important thing is an earnest thank-you for a job well done.

That's the feeling at Schuylerville schools after the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce saluted educators in the school district for success in raising English Language Arts scores in the district. In the last five years, the fourth-grade ELA tests have run consistently above the state average while the eighth-grade scores have passed and remained above the state average.

"It's imperative that businesses work with schools," said Schuylerville Teachers Association President Maureen Cronin-Rossley. "The public schools are going to feed the businesses, and business and taxpayers feed the schools."

Chamber President Joseph Dalton Jr. made the congratulations at a November superintendent's conference day, which also included pro-education remarks by former state Comptroller Carl McCall.

Cronin-Rossley cited the cooperative spirit between the 140-member local and the administration, led by Superintendent Leon Reed. "The school allows teachers to teach the way they want and gives us materials and facilities, and we do the rest. We're treated as professionals," she said.
