A day to appreciate School-Related Professionals - Nov. 18 Radio campaign boosts support staff
November 18, 2004 NYSUT First Vice President Dick Iannuzzi tapes his radio spot while technician Jeff Ronner monitors. For the second year in a row, Gov. George Pataki declared Nov. 18 as School-Related Professionals Recognition Day. In radio public service announcements, New York State United Teachers shouted it from the airwaves. NYSUT's First Vice President Dick Iannuzzi talks about how SRPs are vital to a child's education in taped public service announcements that aired statewide, concluding on the second annual recognition day. "They keep our schools clean and safe. They assist teachers in the classroom. They transport our children to and from school. They provide nutritious meals. SRPs keep our schools running and more," Iannuzzi said, noting that on Nov. 18 "say thank you to an SRP." The recognition was spurred by a strong lobbying effort by NYSUT in the 2002-03 legislative session. In commemoration, NYSUT supplied local unions with stickers proclaiming "Proud to be an SRP and "Proud to work with an SRP." "We all know SRPs make schools work," said Alan Lubin, NYSUT executive vice president. "We're proud they have a day of their own to be recognized." The recognition is needed, noted Ann Gentilin, who chairs NYSUT's SRP advisory committee. "Too often, districts forget that without us, schools don't operate." |
