Tasting some sweet recognition

September 9, 2004

At last, someone will recognize food service professionals who spice menus with good nutrition combined with an idea of the realities of eating at the school cafeteria.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine will award four Golden Carrot awards (ranging from $500 to $3,500) this fall to food service providers who offer healthful options on the lunch line.

The application deadline is so close you can taste it - Sept. 15.

For info, visit: www.pcrm.org/news/golden_carrot.html, or call Colleen Young, (202) 686-2210, ext. 330.

The physicians committee is looking for programs that:

  • encourage kids to eat lower-fat meals, fruits and vegetables;
  • offer culturally appropriate healthy offerings;
  • provide non-dairy foods and beverages to accommodate children who avoid cow's milk;
  • foster community partnerships; and
  • reduce child obesity or improve child health through food service operations.
