SRP: Training tailored to transportation staff

June 2, 2004

NYSUT is doing its part to make training relevant to bus drivers.

Through its Education and Learning Trust, New York State United Teachers is launching a five-part workshop series for school-transport professionals, offered in various regions around the state.

Workshop topics include creating a first impression on the school bus, dealing with difficult students and skills for effective communication.

Joyce Barrow, an ELT facilitator, helped tailor the series for bus drivers and aides. "People at the workshop come up to me and say 'this is the first time we have had something just for us,'" said Barrow, a member of the Frontier Central Employees Association in western New York. "One thing I tell the people attending the workshops is the first contact and first impression students have of school is often the bus driver. We may be the first person the kids see in the morning, the first to say hello and the first to smile. We have an opportunity to make them feel good about themselves."

Linda Tarbox, a bus driver and president of Newark Valley Central Bus Drivers and School Related Professionals in Tioga County , also worked on the workshop series.

"Most school districts don't provide SRPs with a lot of training," said Tarbox. "When I teach workshops, people come up to me after the class asking where they can get more training. There is no other place to get this information. NYSUT saw the need and set about providing the courses we were calling for."
