Workshops offer credit for health care workers

June 2, 2004

The union continues to add professional development opportunities that help health care workers — and supply continuing education credit.

The latest example came from the New York State United Teachers Health Care Professionals Issues Forum in Albany . Five workshops in the April conference earned participants continuing education credit offered through the American Federation of Teachers Healthcare Division. Credit-bearing workshops were: treating children with diabetes; new treatments in diabetes; obesity — increasing risk of type 2 diabetes in children; managing infectious diseases; and physical assessments in emergency situations.

Barbara Hammond, a school nurse who is professionally certified through the National Board for Certification of School Nurses, believes ongoing professional development is vital to providing quality care. "It's important to be up to the minute on what's going on," said Hammond, a member of the New Hartford Teachers Association in the Utica suburbs. "The nursing assessments we make are based on our training."

The workshops were selected because they best meet the needs of today's health care professionals, explained Maureen Rizzi, NYSUT manager of training. "Diabetes education is a priority of NYSUT's Health Care Professionals Council," she said. "The workshop on managing infectious diseases is a state-mandated course for many health care professionals."
