| A ‘chartered' course 
May 5, 2004 The 32 members of St. Dominic's Staff Association know all about being a small group in a large organization. St. Dominic's school is a subsidiary of St. Dominic's Home, a not-for-profit agency that has served children and young adults in Rockland County for more than a century and has more than 700 employees. Since voting to be represented by New York State United Teachers in 2001, the group of teachers, teaching assistants, teacher aides, crisis intervention specialists and behavioral management workers have made strides in improving teaching and learning conditions at the school, collected food for NYSUT's 12th annual food drive and is gearing up to bargain its second contract. Chris Ann Garcia is local president. Members recently received their local charter from the national affiliate, the American Federations of Teachers. |
