Health-care union rally ready to roll

April 21, 2004

Three unions are teaming up to lift their voices on behalf of nurses on Tuesday, May 4.

Several hundred nurses and health care professionals are expected to raise a hue and cry on the steps of the state Capitol in Albany. They will ask the Legislature to adopt a law banning mandatory nurse overtime, and to promote safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. New York State United Teachers, Public Employees Federation and Service Employees International Union are sponsoring the rally.

NYSUT Executive Vice President Alan Lubin, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Troy, are scheduled to speak. Debra Nelson, NYSUT legislative director, and Jennifer Cunningham of SEIU will emcee the ceremony.

The rally is scheduled from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on the north steps of the Capitol.
