Growing NYSUT from Buffalo to Hicksville

April 7, 2004

Since delegates last met in Washington, D.C., NYSUT has grown by more than 10,000 members - due in part to several organizing wins.

"We either get bigger or we get smaller," said New York State United Teachers President Tom Hobart.

In one year, the statewide union added 19 new bargaining units, including those gained in recent organizing victories at the Resource Center in western New York and the Research Foundation at LaGuardia Community College, a chapter of the Professional Staff Congress.

Hobart welcomed members from new affiliates to their first Representative Assembly including delegates from Deer Park TA, Hicksville Congress of Teachers, Association of Greece Central Educational Professionals, and the Buffalo and Erie County Librarians Association.
