ETP offers bully prevention course

January 14, 2004

A teacher is often the best person to sense bad vibes in a classroom. With that in mind, the union's Effective Teaching Program has developed a course called "Bully Prevention: Tips and Strategies for School Leaders and Classroom Teachers."

Nearly 3 million violent crimes occur on or near school campuses annually, according to U.S. Department of Justice figures.

"Children need safe schools to learn effectively," said Rosemarie Rosen, educational program manager for New York State United Teachers. "This course was developed to help educators create safe environments within their schools."

Course topics include understanding the bully-victim relationship and the origins of bullying. Participants earn one graduate credit for the 15-hour course, offered in many regions of the state. For information, contact ETP at (800) 528-6208; also, see nysut.org/etp.
