New York State United Teachers participants in the Oct. 5 and Oct. 19 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raised $538,528, according to preliminary figures reported by the American Cancer Society. As a statewide flagship sponsor, NYSUT donated an additional $25,000, resulting in a preliminary total of $563,528.

ACS expects the final 2003 numbers to rise 10 to 20 percent as the money continues to come in from pledges. According to ACS records, 5,399 walkers used NYSUT pledge forms at sites around the state, stretching from Long Island to Buffalo.

"We're extremely proud so many of our members took part in the event, either walking or donating money for this important cause," said NYSUT First Vice President Antonia Cortese, who oversaw the union's ACS effort and joined a large union contingent in Albany. This is the second year NYSUT has signed on as a flagship sponsor. The money raised is used for ACS research, education, patient support and advocacy programs to defeat the disease.

ACS reported the region covering New York state raised a total of $9 million in the campaign.
